The M-16's 5.56x45mm NATO military cartridge is a high powered version
of the .223 Remington, which strictly speaking is 0.224" diameter while
a classic .22 is "only" 0.223. :-)
So the M-16 is just a big bigger in diameter than a .22. The shell is
much bigger.
